Game of the month project
I’ve been thinking of different game related projects to keep myself amused, and I’ve decided to go with what I’m calling a game of the month project.
No, nothing to do with the newest and latest games each month, though I still plan on playing & reviewing those if they seem noteworthy; but rather I also plan on playing and writing about games each month that focus on a particular battle that happened during that month. Even given my upside down southern hemisphere seasons I’m hoping this might help give me a bit more of a feeling for these battles.
The battles I plan on covering during the next year of this project may change, but so far my thinking is:
| September | Market Garden |
|---|---|
| October | El Alamein |
| November | Case Blue/Uranus |
| December | Austerlitz |
| January 2011 | Typhoon |
| February | Verdun |
| March | U-Go in Burma |
| April | Marita-Merkur |
| May | The Coral Sea |
| June | Overlord |
| July | Gettysburg |
| August | The Battle of Britain |
| September | Market Garden (try again!) |
There are battles on that list I don’t yet have games for, and battles that I’m not even sure are in any computer game. There are battles on that list that I’ve gamed many times, and a few that I’ve never played even the once. And of course there are battles that I’d like to have made the cut that’ll have to wait for next time I do this.
I plan on playing some boardgames too, not only to fill in any gaps but also to compare the different designs on offer in these two great arms of our hobby. And as well as having some fun maybe I’ll even learn a little something along the way.
UPDATE:
I was too slow getting started, my targets were too ambitious, & I was plagued by technical failures - which is all suitably Market-Garden-esque! I'll have another crack at those Rhine bridges next September when I'm better prepared, and will instead start this show with Thirty Corps in the desert.
